Hot Ones Only
The three year old bay stallion by Invitation
Only enjoyed a year that most horses are lucky to
accomplish in their entire career. Four AQHA World
Championships, five Congress Championships, three
NSBA World Championships, and three NSBA BCF
Champion titles and that was just in 2009.
“Bruno” is the only 3-year-old stallion to be an
eight-time Congress Champion and he's the Highest
Money Earning Hunter Under Saddle Stallion with
Lifetime Earnings over $100,000.
If there’s anything left to prove,
it’s…well…hmmm…uuuh. Okay, he’s pretty much done it
all. And did we mention he’s only THREE?
When You’re Hot, You’re Hot! Hot
Ones Only Lights Up The Show Pen.
Once again a new face will grace the cover of
the 2010 Hunt Seat Horses.com Advertisers
Directory. After a record setting season, it is
only fitting that our new cover is one of the
hottest hunt seat horses in the nation,
Hot Ones Only
Hot Ones Only
is living up to his name and turning into "The
Only" stallion of his kind. He continues to
exceed all expectations and records for that
matter. The big loveable young stallion has been
taking the hunt seat world by storm, one
championship at a time.
Sired by the legendary sire Invitation Only
and out of Hot Shot Hit (TB), Hot Ones Only,
affectionately known as Bruno around the barn,
is bred in the purple, and certainly acts the
part. Bred by David James of Purcell, Oklahoma,
Hot Shot Hit was purchased by Tammy Dyer at the
David James Dispersal Sale. "Jason (Martin) and
I went to the sale looking for broodmares to
bred to Jerry (The
Big Sensation)", recalls Tammy. "We
went over the mares carefully and took a look at
any prior foals that were also in the sale and
settled on Hot Shot Hit. We liked how she was
bred. She goes back to Seattle Slew, the
Kentucky Derby winner". A few short months
later, "Hot Shot" would deliver a one in a
million colt.
"We knew Bruno was special from the very
start", says Tammy's daughter Sharnai Thompson.
For one thing, he’s always been huge.
He
is now 17 hands tall. And really laid back and
lazy. When I started working with him we could
see he was going to be exceptional. He really is
an awesome minded horse. But we never realized
just how special he was until we started showing
him".
In keeping with the
High Point Performance
tradition, trainers for the Thompson family,
Bruno started winning right away. At his first
show at the Congress, Bruno won the 2 year old
Congress Masters Hunter Under Saddle class with
trainer Beth Case in the irons. Everyone loved
him and thought he was special, but no one could
have predicted that the young stallion would go
on to win the Congress Championship in Junior
Hunter Under Saddle with Beth and also the
Amateur Hunter Under Saddle with Sharnai.
Winning all three of those classes in the same
year at the Congress has never been done before,
and especially not by a 2 year old. And it was
just the beginning of what was to come.
The following year, Charlie Cole starts Bruno
in the driving. And by now no one was surprised
when Bruno took to it without any fuss. "He is
so willing to please and just takes it all in
stride", says Sharnai. Back at the Congress for
his second time, Bruno wowed thecrowd
as well as the judges and collected another 5
Congress Championships to set yet another
record. Bruno is the youngest horse to ever earn
8 Congress titles.
With the focus shifting to the World Show
Bruno entered the pen with Sharnai in the
Amateur Hunter Under Saddle. And no one should
have been surprised when they left with the
Golden Globe and his first World Championship.
Bruno has a unique style that sets him apart
from the rest of the pen. He has the most
amazing sweepy flat front leg and a hock to die
for. He is simply breath-taking to watch both in
the cart and on the flat.
Next came the Pleasure Driving with Sharnai,
and again, another gold trophy was added to an
already amazing show career. But the Open week
was yet to come and with Charlie Cole in the
cart, Hot Ones Only added his 3rd World
Championship trophy. And finally, Beth Case
captured the Junior Hunter Under Saddle World
title to make it a clean sweep - 4 for 4 at the
World Show.
So what could possibly come next, for such an
incredible horse? Due to an overwhelming
response from his fans, Bruno will stand for his
second season at stud at
High Point Performance.
Then he will return to the show pen.
"He has had a few jumping lessons lately and
seems to really have a knack for it. He seems to
really enjoy it. He is so big and lazy we
weren't sure he would have any interest in it at
all. However, seemingly just like everything
else Bruno takes on, he will take the jumping
well too. It may take a little time for him to
figure
out exactly what you want but when he does he
complies willingly and exceeds our expectations.
We are looking forward to him jumping but I'm
sure I will be very nervous watching that. We
will see how it goes but hopefully he can return
to the World Show and be a Super Horse
Contender. He has nothing else to prove by being
a show horse but that's his calling. He lights
up a show pen and warms our hearts at the same
time," says Sharnai.
So what is this record setting stallion
really like? "Bruno is SPOILED", states Sharnai,
"but deserves every bit of it. He's just like
youwould expect a big fat guy to be - he eats
everything. His favourite, it seems, is
peppermints so he always has good breath! He is
very, very sweet and loves to be loved on. He is
also very lazy. Most of the time he can be found
passed out in his stall. Unlike most horses,
especially by the end of the horse show, Beth
and I are trying to conserve every bit of his
energy so we can show in our classes".
Watch for Hot Ones Only to continue to light
up the show pens in the future. We wish them the
best of luck in the future.
Hot Ones Only and
AQHA Professional Horseman Beth Case won the
2009 world championship in junior hunter under
saddle.
As the top 16 junior hunter under saddle horses
trotted into the arena November 19, you could
feel the energy in the air from the crowd. Each
horse had his or her cheering section. AQHA
Professional Horseman Beth Case rode in fourth
in the trot-in aboard Tammy Dyer’s 3-year-old
stallion Hot Ones Only. “Bruno” had already had
an enviable 2009 AQHA World Championship Show
experience: championships in the amateur
hunter under saddle
and amateur pleasure driving
with Tammy’s daughter, Sharnai, and another
championship in the junior pleasure
driving with AQHA
Professional Horseman Charlie Cole at the lines.
It was a tough field of horses, but Beth was
confident the youngster just might have it in
him for another – which he did. The
Journal caught up
with Beth and Sharnai after the win photos were
done. Beth is part of the Highpoint Performance
Horses training team, and she and Sharnai have
worked together a long time. It's easy to tell
they enjoy and respect each other.
Q. Beth, what were you thinking as
they were calling the numbers out?
BETH: Please don’t call my
number!
Q. Were you pretty confident coming
in?
BETH: Yeah, I knew he was
one of the best ones. He usually behaves
perfectly and he did again. So I knew I had a
shot.
SHARNAI: I was very nervous.
She wasn’t, but I was very nervous.
BETH: I get the most nervous
when I’m in the lineup. I’m thinking, please
don’t call me; please don’t call me.
Q. How do you all tag-team and work
with Bruno?
BETH: He stays at our barn
and I ride him almost every day. At the horse
shows, she rides him. And it’s not like she has
to practice and practice because he’s so good
and she rides so good.
SHARNAI: He’s very easy.
BETH: She can get on and go
around; he behaves.
SHARNAI: Especially by the
end of the horse show, we’re usually trying to
conserve energy and use as little as possible
because he’s passed out in his stall all the
time.
Q. Sharnai, what do you respect most
about Beth?
SHARNAI:
Beth works her butt off, and I don’t think
that’s a surprise to anyone. And she tries to
stay out of trouble and she does her job and
does it very well, and that’s what I try to
emulate.
Q. Beth, same question about Sharnai.
BETH: Sharnai works hard,
too. There are a lot of people that just want to
come and get dressed and get on, and she’ll stay
and she’ll wrap his legs and take care of him.
She broke him … she has her yearlings and
2-year-olds at home and she does all those, and
when they’re ready for me, she sends them to me.
SHARNAI: If they’re good
enough for you. (She laughs.)
BETH: If I tell her I want
it, or I say you keep that one, Sharnai.
SHARNAI: It’s actually a
funny story, but when I broke him, the day we
got home from the World Show, the Monday after,
I look out the window when Beth should still be
sleeping, and it’s like 7:30 a.m.
BETH: No, it was after
Thanksgiving.
SHARNAI: (Nodding.) It was
right after Thanksgiving, and she’s loading up
all the 2-year-olds she likes to go over to her
house. I was like, take a break! And he was one
of them that year.
Q. How are you guys going to
celebrate after this World Show?
SHARNAI: Beth’s not really a
celebrator, but I’m going to make her go out and
have some fun.
BETH: I’ll celebrate every
once in a while. If I don’t have to work the
next day, I’ll go out and celebrate.
SHARNAI: Which we don’t, and
we don’t have very far to drive home. We’re
going to celebrate tonight, for sure.
Q. Is there anything else you want to
add about Bruno?
BETH: Bruno is the most
beautiful horse in the world.
SHARNAI: I can’t explain how
good he is to be around. He’s awesome. He’s very
spoiled, but he deserves it. We’re so proud of
him. Four world championships as a 3-year-old,
it’s incredible.
HOT ONES ONLY AND
CHARLIE COLE WIN GOLD IN JUNIOR PLEASURE
DRIVING.
It’s a good thing
there was a little floor space in the cart being
pulled by Hot Ones Only, because for the second
time in two weeks, the 3-year-old stallion
hauled off a world title in pleasure driving.
Last week, it was in the
amateur division
with T. Sharnai Thompson at the reins. This
week, it was with trainer Charlie Cole in the
junior pleasure driving class during FedEx Open
Week at the 2009 AQHA World Championship Show.
Sharnai and “Bruno” also captured the
amateur hunter under
saddle world championship on November
8. Needless to say, it has been a busy couple of
weeks for the connections of Hot Ones Only.
The American Quarter Horse Journal
spoke with
Charlie Cole and Bruno's owner, Tammy Thompson
Dyer, after the evening's finals were done.
Q: Charlie, how was he tonight?
CHARLIE: I wasn’t nervous at
all. I knew that this was a great horse; he
loves his job, and I just had confidence that he
was going to be good, and he was.
Q:
Tammy, how does it feel to go from a world
championship during amateur week in pleasure
driving with your daughter and then go into open
week and do the same thing?
TAMMY: It’s very exciting. I
can’t tell you. I has been a lot of fun to have
him. I have full confidence in Charlie and in
Beth. We couldn’t be having more fun.
Q: What’s next for this horse?
CHARLIE: I think we’re all
going on vacation. (laughing) I’m going to
Hawaii.
TAMMY: Bruno also gets some
time off, which he deserves.
Q: You know, Bruno is only 3. Is this
kind of success unusual for a horse this young?
CHARLIE: I think so. He’s
done things that no other 2- or 3-year-old has
done. He’s just a really mature horse. It’s easy
for him.
TAMMY: He’s very quiet, very
laid back. He loves what he does. And he’s a
stallion.
Q: What did we talk about last week,
Tammy? Bruno will be standing …
TAMMY: He’ll be breeding at
High Point Performance Horses – Charlie and
Jason Martin’s place – this coming breeding
season.
Coming into the evening
finals on November 9, Sharnai Thompson, 22, had a lot to
organize. She was riding in no less than four finals
classes: the amateur pleasure driving on her stallion,
Hot Ones Only, and in the amateur western pleasure,
amateur western riding and horsemanship on her mare,
Sleepin In The Rain. That’s a lot of outfit and tack
changes. She had high hopes for her talented young
stallion, “Bruno.” The two captured the
amateur hunter under saddle world
championship on November 8. “He
hasalways been easy
at (pleasure driving), and he’s one of those horses
where it’s just natural for him,” she said. But she sure
wasn’t certain she would drive out with another gold
trophy in the cart with her, which she did. There wasn’t
much time to bask in the win – she had to get ready for
the pleasure.
Q. Did you expect Bruno to do so well?
SHARNAI: No! Not at all. He’s only 3
and I, it was a little scary, all those horses feel a
lot more broke than mine and I have a stallion, so I was
a little scared going in. But he could not have been any
better. He was perfect.
Q: How did you get him ready between the All
American Quarter Horse Congress and now?
SHARNAI:
We have not driven him since the Congress. We drove him
in practice quite a bit at the Congress, because he had
not done it a lot before. But he was really good at the
Congress, and I drove him in the prelims yesterday and
he, once again, could not have been any better. So we
really didn’t practice a whole lot. We just went in
there and went with what we had.
Q: Does Bruno have anything else this week?
SHARNAI: He has the junior hunter
under saddle and the junior driving. And that’s next
week. So he gets a few days off, a deserved few days
off.
Q: How did you prepare for this string of
finals?
SHARNAI: I slept for about 12 hours
last night. I knew it was going to be a long stretch. I
had all my outfit changes laid out. I just tried to
prepare for it as much as I could because I knew it was
going to be hard. I had some really good people helping
me. It went really smooth, actually. No really big
glitches or wardrobe malfunctions or anything like that.
You hear it over and
again – a win with a horse is somehow sweeter when
you’ve raised that horse, and Sharnai Thompson of
Cornelius, North Carolina, will attest to that. On
November 8, she rode her talented 3-year-old bay
stallion Hot Ones Only, aka “Bruno,” to the 2009 amateur
hunter under saddle world championship, unanimous under
all five judges. “I was so nervous I couldn’t button my
shirt!” she said in the arena, laughing after her
victory lap, throwing the world champion’s T-shirts to
the crowd. “I am so proud to say that I have raised a
world champion,” she added. “That means a lot to me. I’m
so proud of him.” The Journal
caught up with her again
outside the arena.
Q. What makes this win on this horse special?
SHARNAI: I raised him. I pulled him
out. Beth (Case) has done all the riding on him and
that’s what makes it all more special.
Q. Tell me about your program, you and your
family’s program.
SHARNAI: We have a place in Texas;
we raise Quarter Horses and Paints. We have some reiners,
some hunt seat horses, some of everything. We have a
donkey. I try to bring them all along the whole way.
They go to Charlie (Cole) and Jason’s (Martin) down the
street, and Beth and Charlie and Jason help me along the
way. It has really worked out well. We’ve raised some
good ones, which is pretty tough to do.
Q.
What are your plans with him?
SHARNAI: Beth is showing him next
week in the junior hunt seat, and then we’ll see if he
jumps. He’s going to be 4 next year and he might come
back next year and be an all-around contender. He’s
already doing the driving; I have the finals for the
driving tomorrow. And we just hope that he gets better
and better.
Q. Anyone else you want to thank?
SHARNAI: Beth has helped me so much,
she’s really great. And Charlie and Jason are always
there for me. But first and foremost, my mom. I always
feel like she lives vicariously through me. But we
really do this together and this is fun for both of us.
Q. If you could think of three quick tips on
what it takes to be a world champion, what would they
be?
SHARNAI: First and foremost is
practice. I’m a firm believer that whatever you put into
it is what you get out of it. If you have to get up in
the middle of the night (to ride), it’s probably worth
it. It may not come back at that horse show, but it will
eventually.
Secondly, make friends with your assistant horse
trainer. It’s always good to have them on your side.
They are always there behind the scenes and you’re going
to need them at some point.
Third, be ready. Be on time. Have your stuff ready.
Go through and even do a run-through the day before to
make sure all your equipment’s ready, everything has
been used before and then there won’t be any stress at
show time.
Fun Fact: Hot Ones Only keeps
getting better – in 2008 he won the All American Quarter
Horse Congress Masters 2-Year-Old Hunter Under Saddle
and the Congress championships in the junior and amateur
hunter under saddle. His 2009 Congress titles included
wins in the junior and amateur pleasure driving and in
the amateur hunter under saddle.
Hot Ones Only
is re-writing the record books faster than people can keep up. What we know for sure is that with three Congress Championships his 2 year old year and an unbelievable five more wins in 2009, he is the only horse to win eight Congress Championships by his 3 year old year.
"Bruno" as he is fondly called (he was named after a good friend of owner Tammy Dyer's named "Bruna") set multiple records and
amazed the crowd as a 2 year old when he won the prestigious Congress Masters 2YO Hunter Under Saddle with Beth Case and the next day won the Junior Hunter Under Saddle with Beth and the Amateur Hunter Under Saddle with Sharnai Thompson
- ¦all as a 2 year old. This year he returned to the Congress for an incredible five additional wins.
Now the entire Highpoint team set their sights on making history at the 2009 AQHA World Championship show. Sharnai Thompson showed him in Amateur Hunter Under Saddle and won Unanimously! Amateur Pleasure Driving is next. During open week, Charlie Cole will show him in the Junior Pleasure Driving and Beth Case will present him in the Junior Hunter Under Saddle.
"It's exciting to work and train a horse like Bruno,"¯
says Charlie Cole. Sharnai raised him and from the first couple weeks of his life we all knew he was special. Once he was started under saddle we knew just how special he was. He never had a bad day. He's a beautiful horse that moves incredible and is unbelievably good minded. I broke him to drive and showed in his first driving class all in the same week as a two year old. We couldn't be happier with his success at this
year's Congress.
Sharnai Thompson adds, We really appreciate the profound praise and encouragement from trainers, breeders, and judges alike.¯ Thompson appreciates everything Bruno has brought to her life.
"With all the strife and struggles that come with breeding and raising horses, Bruno makes me proud that I do. He's a once in a lifetime horse that I held in my arms since day one which makes it even more extraordinary to watch him go from a prospect to a champion."
After the World Show, Bruno will return to Highpoint and stand at stud for the 2010 breeding season.
"We bred Bruno in 2009 with an incredible response to him,"
says owner Tammy Dyer. "He had a full book. Even with all of his success we have decided to leave his breeding fee for 2010 the same because we have a great appreciation for our mare owners and we also feel the pain as everyone else with the economy."
According to Thompson,
"We hope he will produce a new age of big, beautiful, great minded horses like he is, but to us, he will always affectionately be...just Bruno."¯
Beth Case and Hot Ones Only Win the Masters
Hunter Under Saddle
Congratulations to the newest Congress Champion in the
Congress Masters Hunter Under Saddle, Junior Hunter
Under Saddle and Amateur Hunter Under Saddle. Tammy Dyer
had no idea what the future would hold for her the night
that she received a phone call telling her one of the
mares had foaled.
“Christi
Christensen, who helps us with foaling out some mares,
called me to tell me that our mare, Hot Shot Hit, had
foaled.” Tammy said. “I was with my friend Bruna, who is
from Brazil. She was so excited that we had a newborn
foal and said I should name him after her. So we call
him Bruno.
“We had bought this mare while she was already in foal
to Invitation Only with this foal, and we were very
excited for him to arrive. Sharnai immediately fell in
love with him.”
Tammy’s daughter, Sharnai Thompson, is currently a
senior at Southern Methodist University. She will
graduate in May with a business degree, and plans on
attending law school next. Although Sharnai is extremely
busy with school, she takes care of the family farm,
Taymar Ranch, pretty much by herself. She even foals out
many of the mares on the ranch, thanks to help from
Christi.
“All of our horses are Sharnai’s pride and joy,” Tammy
said. “But Bruno is her baby. She has loved him from the
moment he hit the ground.”
Although Sharnai may have a special place in her heart
for foals that are born on the family ranch, it was
obvious that this colt – named Hot Ones Only – would be
special. “Sharnai started working with him when he was a
baby,” Tammy explained. “Right from the start, we could
tell he had an amazing attitude.
“I know that everyone will say that their stud has a
great mind, but this horse really is amazing. He is the
best-minded horse you could ever imagine. He does
everything he’s asked to do, and he is just an absolute
joy to have around.”
After Sharnai put the ground work on Bruno, he made the
trip to HighPoint Performance Horses right after
Thanksgiving last year to begin his training with Jason
Martin, Charlie Cole and Beth Case.
“Beth started riding him, but had to take a couple
breaks because he was growing so big so fast. He’s 17
hands now, so you can imagine how much he grew over the
past year,” Tammy laughed. “We didn’t want to push him,
and neither did Beth, so we made sure to give him plenty
of time off. We took him to the Whitesboro Equine
Therapy Center, where they swam him and then turned him
out every day. We weren’t even sure in the beginning if
he would be able to show as a two-year old.
Then, he seemed to catch up with himself and we were
able to put him back into training with Beth.”
Now that Tammy and Sharnai knew that Bruno would be able
to go back to riding, it was time to make plans on where
he would show, and what classes. “Because Bruno had had
that time off, the Congress Masters Hunter Under Saddle
seemed like the perfect option for him, because it is
later in the year,” Tammy said.
“When it came time to enter, he was in the Masters, but
we also put him in the Junior Hunter Under Saddle and
the Amateur Hunter Under Saddle. We never planned on
showing him in those classes, but we did it kind of as a
back up. You never know what may happen, so we decided
to just put him in the classes. The whole time, I was
assuming we would end up scratching.”
Immediately before the HighPoint left for the Congress,
however, Bruno came down with a nasty cold. The vet
wasn’t sure if the two-year-old would be able to handle
the long trip to Columbus, let alone the two weeks of
stress he would experience once he arrived. Tammy and
Sharnai were resigned to the fact that Bruno would
probably have to wait until next year to make his show
debut.
Luckily, just a few days before the trailer was leaving,
Bruno was cleared by the vet to go to the horse show.
“Beth obviously took it easy on him once they got to the
Congress. Even though the vet cleared him, our first
priority is his well-being.
After all the ups and downs over the year, it was
finally certain that Bruno would show – which is when
the nerves kicked in. “You never know if you really have
a good horse until you put them in that arena for the
first time. Once you can see them against their peers,
then you really know where they stand,” Tammy said.
“We had always thought he was special, but I never want
to be barn-blind. I knew we would know for sure the
night of the Masters.”
Beth, Sharnai, Tammy, the judges, and the crowd knew
that Hot Ones Only was special as soon as he trotted
into the arena for the Masters to begin. “We just could
not believe how well he showed!” Tammy exclaimed. “He
absolutely went out there and behaved like a show horse.
He had his ears up the whole time, and he behaved
perfectly. He is definitely a natural-born show horse.”
It wasn’t only Tammy, however, who thought Bruno proved
himself. “Sharnai just kept saying, ‘he’s my baby, he’s
my baby!’” Tammy laughed. “And Beth didn’t hardly know
what to say! After the class was over, she just looked
at us and said ‘oh my gosh, he was so perfect.’ It was
just great.”
After that amazing win, Tammy assumed that Bruno’s
Congress experience was done. Beth and Sharnai, on the
other hand, had other ideas. “I didn’t even check his
split for the Junior Hunter Under Saddle,” Tammy said.
“I didn’t even think about it! I asked Beth why she
wanted to take him in the Junior. She asked me: ‘Why
not?’
“Then it was Sharnai’s turn. I said the same thing to
her about the Amateur Hunter Under Saddle, and she
looked at me and asked: ‘Why not?’
So the next morning, at 5:00 am, Sharnai met Beth and
Bruno out in the warm-up pen. Sharnai had barely ever
even ridden Bruno before. After about 15 minutes, Beth,
Bruno and Sharnai went back to the barn, satisfied that
everything would be okay.
“Beth literally led Bruno out of his stall, up to the
arena, and got on to show,” Tammy said. “She was worried
about getting him too tired by riding or lunging him
ahead of time.”
Many people who know Beth Case may have not recognized
her during the Junior Hunter Under Saddle class. Why?
Because she was smiling! “Beth NEVER smiles when she
shows,” Tammy laughed. “But she grinned the whole time
in the Junior.”
After the Hot Ones Only and Beth Case were awarded the
bronze for Junior Hunter Under Saddle, Beth led the
stallion out to the warm-up area, where she and Sharnai
stood next to him, waiting for their turn in the
Amateur. “Beth and Sharnai didn’t even ride him in
between the Junior and the Amateur,” Tammy said.
Now it was Sharnai’s turn – and it went just as well as
the previous two classes. Sharnai rode Bruno to his
third bronze trophy for the 2008 Congress.
“It really is a testament to how good minded he is,”
Tammy explained. “He just went out there and showed
every time. It didn’t matter who rode him, what class it
was, if he had been ridden before: he just went out and
did his best.”
His best was not only enough to make his owners proud,
he also set records. Hot Ones Only is the first horse in
Congress history to win the Masters Two-Year-Old Hunter
Under Saddle, Junior Hunter Under Saddle and Amateur
Hunter Under Saddle. As if that wasn’t impressive
enough, he did it all in the same year. In fact, he did
it all within a 24 hour period.
“This will probably will never happen to us again, but
for this moment I’m just enjoying every second of it,”
Tammy said of her Congress experience. “I could not be
more proud of him.”
Right now, Bruno is enjoying a much-deserved rest at
home. After the World Show, however, it will be back to
work. You can look for Bruno in 2009 at a few, selective
shows in Hunter Under Saddle. He also will begin working
towards his Pleasure Driving debut soon.
Hot Ones Only also will stand to a limited number of
mares in 2009. Although Tammy and Sharnai had originally
said they would wait to start his breeding career, the
demand has already started, and he will split his year
between breeding and showing.

GHS: Congratulations on being named the
GoHorseShow.com reader of the month! You’ve
been a supporter and reader of ours from the
beginning and we are thrilled for your recent,
unprecedented success at the Congress.
Sharnai: Thank you! Gohorseshow.com has been
more than accommodating for all my advertising
and horse show needs. It is easy to navigate
and very informative!
GHS: So tell us how you came to own
Hot Ones Only aka “Bruno”. Did you raise him
or buy him?
Sharnai: I raised him from day one (you can
even see a baby picture of him on his website.)
He’s always been monstrous and very lazy. He is
bystill have his mom (Hot Shot Hit) and she’s in
foal to Artful Investment for next year. We
named him Bruno after my mom’s friend, Bruna.
GHS: Bruno won the Masters and
Junior Hunter Under Saddle at the Congress with
Beth Case and the Amateur Hunter Under Saddle
with you – all as a two year old. I’m sure you
knew he was a nice horse, but did you know he
was THAT nice?
Sharnai: I don’t think you ever realize a
horse is THAT nice until something incredible
happens, like winning the Masters at the
Congress. Everyone that has been around him,
Beth, Charlie, and Jason, especially, loved him
and we were all just looking forward to having
such an exceptional horse to show for years to
come that anything he did in the Masters was
metaphorically “gravy”. We had no idea that he
would go on to win the Masters, the Junior, and
the Amateur, it’s unprecedented.
GHS: Tell us about preparing for and
winning the Amateur Hunter Under Saddle at the
Congress.
Sharnai: The last Friday night and Saturday
morning of the Congress was somewhat of a blur.
We were all in shock from winning the Masters
Friday night but couldn’t celebrate much because
Beth was telling me to meet her the next morning
at 5 AM if I wanted to show him in the Amateur.
OF COURSE, I wanted to show him, I wasn’t going
to miss an opportunity like that. So off to bed
we went for a couple hours, I got up and rode
for maybe 15 minutes and the next thing I knew
Beth was showing him in the Junior and then I
was in the very next class, the Amateur. I knew
he would take care of me but he was SO tired.
We didn’t even want to walk him back to the
stalls in between splits so it wouldn’t take
anymore of his energy! It never crossed my mind
that I was on a two year old, he doesn’t look
like a two year old and he certainly doesn’t act
or show like one. Showing him was a blast.
GHS: The 12 judges he showed to at
the Congress gave him 9 firsts, 2 seconds and 1
third place so the judges obviously think he's
speical. What makes him special in your eyes?
Sharnai: All I kept saying after the Masters
was “He’s my baby.” I really feel like he is.
I remember the day he was born and the first day
he was saddled to the first day I saw Beth ride
him and everything in between. It could not be
more rewarding to me to have a horse I raised
turn out to be so exceptional. This is a new
high for me.
GHS: What has Beth said since the
big wins?
Sharnai: Just a little side note about Beth –
anyone that knows her knows that this highly
uncharacteristic of her, but all during the
Junior Hunter Under Saddle, she couldn’t stop
smiling. We were laughing while she was showing
and when she came out she said “I just couldn’t
stop. I thought he had been perfect the night
before in the Masters and now he was even
better. He was so good!”
Some other comments that Beth said to me:
“He is the best minded horse I have ever
ridden.”“We literally pulled him out of the stall and
saddled him. I rode him for two minutes and
showed him.”
“Someone told me before I went in the Junior
I would be the first person to win the Master’s
and the Junior the same year on the same horse
and I said, ‘Thanks, but that probably won’t
happen,’ then it did!”
“When Sharnai showed him the only thing I was
worried about was if she could keep him going
because he is so lazy, but she did and he looked
great.”
“Since the day I picked him up from Sharnai’s
to start riding him, he never told me no. Even
when I could tell things were hard for him he
always tried.”
GHS: You've mentioned to me that he
had to come back from adversity – can you tell
us more about that?
Sharnai: Toward the end of February this year
we noticed that he was growing SO BIG, SO FAST,
we decided to give him some time off. We knew
he was a very nice horse so we didn’t want to
pressure him too much, and we even thought about
holding him back to show him as a three year old
simply to give him enough time to mature. He
spent a couple months at what I call the “Horse
Spa,” also known as Whitesboro Equine Therapy,
swimming every day and spending the rest of the
day turned outside. By the end of April he
seemed to be ready to continue his training and
we haven’t regretted it since. He learned
quickly from an early age and didn’t miss a
beat. Also, about a week before the Congress he
came down with a bad cold and the vet told us he
wasn’t even going to be able to go, but with the
help of our vet, Tony Rocconi coming to check on
him every day he finally said two days before we
left he could go.
GHS: What are your future plans with
Bruno? Goals?
Sharnai: Heading into the Congress, it never
crossed my mind to breed him anytime soon. I
actually had someone email me about breeding to
him because she saw his picture in a magazine
and I responded by saying basically we’re not
planning on collecting him but if we do next
year I’ll let you know. However, after the
Congress we have been overwhelmed by people that
have fallen in love with him and want to secure
a breeding as soon as possible. So after much
deliberation we have decided to stand him to a
limited number of mares at Highpoint Performance
Horses. However, we are planning on showing him
very little next year at select futurities and
possibly in the pleasure driving. I would love
to see him show at the World Show next year.
GHS: Anything else?
Sharnai: One last thing I would like to add,
our hearts and prayers go out to Nancy and Luke
Wilkerson and Susan and Stanley Scott. Brad was
a great father, husband, and friend and we will
miss him greatly. May God bless them at this
time.

Hot Ones Only - The
two-year-old stallion did the
unthinkable at the Congress. On
Friday night, with Beth Case aboard,
he won Masters Hunter Under Saddle
and then repeated Saturday afternoon
in the Junior. Great, right? He
wasn’t done yet. The next class
after the Junior was the Amateur
Hunter Under Saddle and “Bruno” won
that handily as well with Sharnai
Thompson to complete the trifecta.
Incredibily, Hot Ones Only is the
only horse to sweep all three
classes in history and the only
two-year-old to win both the Junior
and Amateur Hunter Under Saddle.
Considering most two-year-olds
struggle to make one trip at the
Congress, let alone win three in an
18-hour timeframe, the sweep was
simply remarkable.
